Project 003: Networking Experiments
CATEGORY: NETWORKING | STATUS: EXPERIMENTAL
Sometimes the point of an experiment isn't to solve a pressing problem. Sometimes it's simply to find out what happens when old enterprise equipment meets a home lab.
THINGS WORTH TRYING
- 100GbE: Investigating affordable secondhand switches and NICs.
- RDMA: A particular point of curiosity. Does it work well on the hardware and software available here?
- PCIe 3.0: Exploring expansion and throughput limitations on an older dual-Xeon Supermicro system.
- 400GbE: A someday experiment, not an everyday home-network upgrade.
These are laboratory interests, not a production network replacement. Actual hardware configurations, procedures, and measurements will be added only as they're tested.
Workshop rule: Just because a switch has 32 ports doesn't mean you have to leave it running all week.
